THE
RIGHT THINGS
We gave our Nordic partners our best
efforts. We sought and found ways to create great value,
ways to protect all stakeholders’ interests. We earned
honesty, fairness and our promised incentive compensation. |
|
Sonera Corporation, then
controlled by the Republic of Finland, engaged and encouraged
our Sonera U.S. team to create value in the U.S. Our US based
team worked hard. We made good things happen. We found ways to
create business opportunities and gains of $1.6 billion in the
United States for Nordic government controlled Sonera. We found
ways to respect our Nordic partners and add great value. We did
the “Right Thing.” We earned the promised 3% share of the fruits
of our labors.
Then the fight started!
Our Nordic partners claim 100% of the gains we delivered. They
seized our small 3% share of gains exceeding $1.6 billion. They
also seize all earnings on our share of those gains.
Sonera’s Management and Board of Directors unreasonably delayed
promised incentive schemes. They sought advice and guidance from
outside experts. They talked to political leaders. Finally,
following more than 18 months of debate and delay, they forced
our money-winning unit into a worthless incentive scheme. That
scheme gave us no opportunity to share in the fruits of our
labors. Then they established retroactively priced incentive
schemes for three money-losing units.
Delays and politics are at the heart of the
problem. The process of getting Nordic “noses aligned” to
support promised incentive schemes dragged on and on well beyond
the date when we delivered great results. That made
retroactively granting our team a share of those results
politically risky. So, Nordic leaders switched us to a new and
already worthless incentive scheme. When we complained, they
terminated us. Then they gave three money losing business units’
retroactively priced incentive schemes. Finland removed Sonera’s
Board of Directors following public criticism of those schemes.
The following year, Sonera merged with Telia to form TeliaSonera.
Today, TeliaSonera is majority owned and controlled by the
governments of Sweden and Finland.
There is no question of unjust enrichment.
Our team added great value, gains not losses. We added value
equal to the value added by 22,000 Fins working for an entire
year. Sweden and Finland will ultimately use their share of
those gains to provide health care, unemployment pay, college
degrees, and other benefits to their citizens. The gains we
created will pay for one year of medical care for more than
500,000 Swedes and Finns; or more than 900,000 months of Nordic
unemployment compensation; or a four-year college education for
more than 20,000 Swedes and Finns. Yet, If Nordic leaders have
their way, no American, not one member of our team, our
families, or any other U.S. citizen will ever benefit from any
of our hard work and great success in the United States.
We earned our incentive pay many times over. We delivered great
gains for all of our fellow stakeholders. As agreed, we earned a
small share of the value we added. We earned medical, education,
retirement and other benefits represented by our small stake in
a great success. Now, we are working hard to secure those
benefits as well as fairness and justice for our families and
for all Americans.
